How to apply touch-up paint on vehicle?
1. Prepare the area
- Thoroughly wash the car and the specific area you're repairing to remove any dirt, wax, or grease.
- Ensure the surface is completely dry.
2. Apply primer (if needed)
- If the scratch has gone down to bare metal, apply a thin layer of primer.
- Allow the primer to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.
3(A). Apply the basecoat
- Shake the touch-up paint well to ensure it's thoroughly mixed.
- Use a minimal amount of paint. For a scratch, try to dab the paint into the chip rather than brushing it on like a stroke.
- Apply the paint in thin, light coats, as using too much can look clumpy.
- Let each layer dry for 15-20 minutes before applying the next, if needed.
3(B). Apply the midcoat
- If your vehicle's paint has a pearl layer, you'll need to apply the midcoat after the basecoat is dry. Follow the same process as with the basecoat, applying thin layers and allowing each layer to dry.
- Apply necessary coats to achieve desired color match.
4. Apply the clearcoat
- Once the final color coat is dry, apply a thin, even layer of clearcoat to protect the repaired area.
- Let the clearcoat dry completely.
5. Finish and blend the repair
- For a smoother finish, once the clearcoat is fully dry and the paint has cured, wet sand the repaired area with very-fine grit sandpaper (ie. 2000 to 3000 grit).
- After sanding, use automotive rubbing compound or polishing compound to buff the area and restore the shine.
- Apply a coat of wax to the repaired area after it has fully cured to protect the paint and provide a uniform appearance.
